The meaning of memorial days in Orthodoxy

Orthodox people show respect for the dead and honor their blessed memory. There are several special days in the church calendar when Christians must remember the departed. First you need to pray for your parents or close relatives, and then honor the memory of all Orthodox Christians.

Families gather in temples, visit the cemetery, remember the dead and devote time to reading God's word. This strengthens the bond between relatives, allows you to take your mind off worldly affairs and focus on spiritual thoughts. You can remember loved ones not only on special days, but also on any Saturday. People come to church on Friday nights and submit notes with the names of the deceased to be remembered at the Saturday liturgy.

Orthodox Parent Saturday Calendar

In 2022, the Orthodox Church established days of commemoration of the deceased:

  • Meat – February 26;
  • Saturday of the second week of Great Lent – falls on March 14;
  • Saturday of the third week of Great Lent – celebrated on March 21;
  • Saturday of the fourth week of Great Lent – celebrated on March 28;
  • Radonitsa – celebrated on May 3;
  • Troitskaya – falls on June 11;
  • Dmitrievskaya – falls on November 5.

Also, according to tradition, every year they visit temples and cemeteries on the 9th day after death, at the commemoration of the 40th day, on the anniversary of death and holidays, Mother's Day, Father's Day.

Trinity Parent Saturday

On Trinity Saturday, it is customary to remember parents and pray for all departed Christians. The holiday precedes the Day of the Holy Trinity. The Gospel says that on this date the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles. It marked the emergence of the universal apostolic Church. The descent of the Holy Spirit granted the salvation of the souls of believers. Traditionally, on the Saturday before Pentecost, it is customary to pray for both living and deceased Christians.

Dmitrievskaya parental Saturday

This is the last parental Saturday of the year. It is associated with the day of memory of the great martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki. It is customary to commemorate all the dead, but first they pray for the soldiers who gave their lives for the Orthodox faith.

The holiday appeared thanks to Prince Dmitry Donskoy, who, after winning the Battle of Kulikovo, came to the Trinity-Sergius monastery. Initially, a commemoration was held for the soldiers who died in that battle. Later they began to pray for all Christians on Dmitrievskaya parental Saturday.

Universal (meat-free) parent Saturday

Meat Parent Saturday – first memorial day of the year. Celebrated before the Last Judgment Week and on the eve of Great Lent. The name `` Meat '' associated with the name of Sunday a week before Lent – The meat is empty.

The Ecumenical Saturday has a special meaning in Orthodoxy. During the period of Great Lent, it is not customary to serve the full liturgy. Remembrance of the deceased is allowed only on special days. The Orthodox seek to leave a note in the church with the name of the deceased; another such opportunity will not arise soon.

Radonitsa

The holiday is celebrated after the end of Great Lent and Bright Week. The day falls on a Tuesday, so the name of the parent Saturday is incorrect. Radonitsa is important for believers – this is the first day in a month and a half when the dead are remembered at the Liturgy.

Traditionally, Easter is celebrated for 30 days. Radonitsa should be viewed not as a day of remembrance, but as a chance to share the joy of celebration with deceased relatives. According to the church charter, the funeral liturgy was not accepted on Tuesday.

What they do on Parent Saturday

It is customary to visit the temple on the eve of Friday and on parental Saturday. In the evening, the Great Memorial Service for the Dead is held. In the morning, a funeral liturgy and a general requiem are served. People who come to the temple ask God for forgiveness for their deceased relatives. They cry out for mercy to the deceased. The priest is given a note, where the names of the deceased are indicated. If you can't go to the cemetery, they celebrate the holiday in the church, pray with other Christians. The commemoration is important for the salvation of the soul of a buried person.

Drinks and food are brought to the temple, and then they are distributed to the homeless, the poor. Traditionally, cereals, bread, and sweets are brought. If the weather permits, you should go to the cemetery and devote time to caring for the burial place. In order not to miss the day, it is important to remember when parental Saturdays are in 2022.

What to do in the temple on parent's Saturday

There are traditions that Orthodox Christians must follow. Believers should visit the nearest church and take part in the funeral service. The day before they submit notes, they indicate names in the Old Slavonic language without patronymics and surnames. During the service, they put a lighted candle for rest on a funeral table.

Then people listen to chants and offer a prayer for the soul of a person who has gone into another world. You can pray aloud or silently. You need to ask for forgiveness of the sins of the deceased and the granting of the Kingdom of Heaven to them.

At these moments, the Orthodox should remember that souls – immortal. Believers in Christ will one day be resurrected, so Christians do not part with loved ones forever.

It was said above that you can bring almost any product. The exception is meat and everything that contains it. Alcoholic drinks are also prohibited. Traditionally, food is given to the needy, but priests who commemorate the deceased can also taste it. This rite is called `` Bring Food for Eve. '' This tradition should not be confused with placing food on the grave. The church particularly disapproves of libation at a burial site or at home on a memorial day.

What to do in the graveyard on parent's Saturday

Parent Saturday – this is a mourning date for everyone, so the atmosphere during a visit to the cemetery must be appropriate. You need to think about the spiritual, about the wisdom and power of God. It is important to remember the people who happened to be buried. You need to ask for mercy for them.

They take church candles with them to the grave, light them near the burial site. People bring flowers to decorate the tombstone. The priests advise buying not artificial, but living bouquets. They will not litter the cemetery. By tradition, a pair of flowers is brought, they are laid at the headboard or placed in a vase.

Priests advise against having a memorial dinner at the cemetery. It is customary to distribute any treats to the beggars, but not to put them on the grave. It is forbidden to drink alcoholic beverages, put them near the tombstone, arrange a feast in the cemetery.

If a memorial meal is organized near the grave, kutya, pancakes and other modest dishes are prepared for it. Don't use alcohol, don't say toast. After lunch they clean up, take out the trash. A large-scale ruffle at the burial site is carried out, if the weather permits.

Why carry food on the eve and give alms

The tradition of bringing food to church appeared long ago. The parishioners of the temple have gathered a large common table since ancient times in order to remember their deceased relatives together. Now people are putting food on a special table in the temple. The food then goes to the needs of the parish and to help the poor, who are taken care of by the parish.

This is a good custom, the essence of which is in helping those in need and relieving the burden of people who serve in the temple for free and help in the church by the will of their hearts. If people bring food to the temple, they serve others and commemorate the dead.

If the memorial day falls on fasting, then only lean food is allowed. For example, fruits, mushrooms, savory pastries, vegetables.

There is one more tradition – give alms. Some people worry about who they are giving alms to, how they will spend it. The Christian should not distinguish between persons. It is necessary to give alms for the sake of Christ and not feel embarrassed. If a person is worried that a person in need can spend money on drink, then you can donate food to him. Then the beggar will not be tempted to spend alms on an evil deed.

What not to do on Parent Saturday

On memorial days, you cannot feast in the cemetery, have fun, remember the deceased with alcohol. You cannot leave food, cigarettes – this is a pagan tradition tion. The deceased is not remembered with resentment or anger, they speak only of the good. Deep longing – also a sin. The souls of the departed need prayers, not tears.

Other things not to be done:

  • guess, summon spirits;
  • submit notes in the church with the names of atheists or suicides (they are remembered at home);
  • breaking dishes or mirrors (this is a harbinger of trouble);
  • argue, sort things out.

It is undesirable to work or do business, but this is not a church prohibition, but a way to express respect for the departed. If a person is forced to work on memorial days, this will not be considered a sin.

How to spend parenting Saturday: secular ideas

On parental Saturdays, people try to spend time with their families. There are some ideas for how to celebrate the holiday.
